Story
January 2025. Last day of a road trip. I stopped in Southeast Portland to see a woodworker friend, who pulled out a walnut board that made him light up. To the source I went.
Supplier was a clarinet player with the Oregon Symphony, running walnut out of his Milwaukie garage. Room full of Portland’s quirkiest craftsmen, quietly competing, nobody making eye contact. I waited until their carburetors rattled away.
I wanted the board nobody noticed. Three inches thick, straight-grained, perfect but subtle. Built for the spotlight.
Building took patience. Hand-routed maple inlays through wood best left untouched. Had to thin the maple for elegance and mercy. Clamping pressure post glue-up gave me new respect for Advil.
Skipped the juice groove because grain this good deserves to show off. Integrated coved handles for a clean look and easy lift.
Sometimes we're hunters but sometimes, we're trappers.
